The Best Southern Thanksgiving Meals

In this article, we’ve listed the best Thanksgiving dinner additions from the South and given you the recipes to make them.

All of the instructions have been separated into simple steps that anyone can follow. So, even if you’re a beginner chef, you’ll get to amaze the family with your creations.

Baked Sweet Potato

The sweet potato is quite versatile, so it will find a way to make it to the dinner table anyway. Why not use this opportunity and make something other than fries?

Ingredients

  • Six sweet potatoes
  • 1 tsp Kosher salt
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • Toppings

Instructions

Making our baked sweet potato recipe won’t be that difficult, so this is the perfect recipe to start the holiday cooking. There are only three steps to follow, so let’s start right away.

Step 1

Preheating the oven is where we usually start. Set it precisely to 400 degrees F, and proceed to step 2.

Step 2

Get a sheet tray and line it with foil. In it, add the potatoes. Before you start baking, you’ll need to poke each potato with a fork. Also, brush them with olive oil and sprinkle them with salt.

Step 3

Baking is the only thing left to do. After 45-60 minutes, take the potatoes out of the oven. Give them a few minutes to cool down, then split them in the middle.

If you’ve prepared toppings, this is the time to add them. Bacon, sour cream, butter, and scallions are a great match. But whatever else comes to mind is acceptable. Let yourself enjoy the process of making Southern food, and you’ll love the meals even more.

Mac and Cheese

It’s hard to imagine a proper Southern Thanksgiving meal setting without a bowl of mac and cheese. So, this pasta recipe is the way to go if you’re going for a Southern theme.

Keep in mind that this recipe won’t resemble the meal you find in a box. This is the proper way to make mac and cheese, and once you try it, you’ll see why we chose it out of all the foods to make for Thanksgiving.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of Macaroni
  • 1/4 cup of Salted butter
  • One egg
  • 2 1/2 cups of Milk
  • 1 lb of Cheese
  • 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp of Dry mustard
  • 1/2 tsp of Salt
  • 1/2 tsp of Black pepper (ground)
  • 1/2 tsp of Seasoned salt
  • Additional spices (cayenne, paprika, etc.)

Instructions

Step 1

The first step is cooking the macaroni. However, you don’t need it to be completely cooked this time. Instead, leave it too firm to eat, drain, and proceed to the next steps.

Step 2

Beat the egg in a small bowl.

Step 3

Find a large pot, put it on the stove, and melt the butter at medium heat. Then, sprinkle in the flour. Keep the pot at medium heat, and whisk the ingredients together for the next five minutes. Make sure to keep whisking and not allow the flour to burn.

After the time is up, add the mustard and the milk. Keep whisking and cook everything for another five minutes, this time at low heat. You’ll know the mixture is done once it becomes very thick.

Step 4

Separate 1/4 cup of the sauce and pour it into the small bowl with the beaten egg. Whisk the ingredients together until you reach a smooth texture.

Step 5

Now, combine the two mixtures by pouring the egg sauce into the large pot. Once again, whisk and stir until the sauce is smooth.

Step 6

You can add the cheese now. Pour it into the sauce and stir until it’s completely melted. Of course, this is the time to spice the cheese. Add salt, pepper, and other spices you prefer, and the sauce will be finished.

Step 7

Finally, it all comes together. Pour the pasta into the sauce and stir to combine.

And there you go, you’ve made one of the most popular Southern Thanksgiving meals.

Sweet Tea

Maybe you didn’t expect any liquids on this list, but sweet tea is too essential not to have it at Thanksgiving dinner.

Ingredients

For the Simple Syrup

  • 3/4 cup of Water
  • 3/4 cup of Granulated sugar

For the Tea

  • Six Black tea bags
  • 10 cups of water (divided)
  • Lemon slices
  • Ice
  • Baking soda

Instructions

First, we’ll explain how to make simple syrup. Then, once you’re done, proceed to make the tea.

Simple Syrup

In a small saucepan, mix water and sugar. Leave the pan on the stove until the mixture reduces. Letting the mixture boil for about 5 minutes usually does the trick. Once you reach the wanted thickness, pour the syrup into a heatproof bowl.

Tea

Boil three cups of water, then remove the pot from the stove. Add the teabags to the boiling water, and let the tea cook for about 5 minutes.

Once the time is up, remove the tea bags and add the syrup.

The only thing left to do is pour into a pitcher, and add ice and lemons.
